What workplace retaliation means
Workplace retaliation happens when an employer fires, demotes, refuses to promote, or otherwise takes negative action against you for exercising your rights as a worker.
For example, if you file a workers’ compensation claim for a workplace injury—or make a harassment complaint against your employer—and they punish you for doing so, that’s retaliation. So is being penalized for taking earned, unused sick days.
Workplace retaliation can vary from a pay cut to a schedule change to being demoted or even fired.
